Why I signed up to DODO Internet

Why I signed up to DODO Internet

I was at the post office for whatever reason and saw a usb modem deal. Buy a Dodo usb modem, and get 12 months data at 250meg a month, all for $99. What an awesome deal I thought.

The media company I run regularly has need for mobile internet access, and hedging for 12 months of access for $100 seemed like a pretty safe bet. There was one problem though.

It was a Dodo product.

I don’t mean to trash Dodo, but if there is one company that is active in the internet service provider space that is discussed negatively, it is DODO. ‘Dodo Sucks’, ‘Dodo are the worst company ever…..’ for whatever reason. I have heard all the comments. I even had my Dad have his own experience with them that made me shake my head in disbelief.

But the feeling I had as I stood in line at the post office pondering whether this was a solution or a nightmare I was buying into, was this:

  • The product is cheaper than others
  • It was prepaid, so there were no chance my card could be over charged
  • The network Dodo use is the Optus Open Network, it is not as good as Telstra NextG, but at the same time it is not as bad as Vodafone.
  • Finally, I wanted to complain about Dodo to, everyone else was, so I wanted to be able to be part of the crowd, and have my own negative Dodo experience to tell everyone about!

So I bought the modem. I then rang the support line to activate, 24 hours they said. I waited 24 hours and nothing happened. ‘Oh no, I knew I was signing up to a nightmare’. I rang the call center (in the Phillipines again) and they had not registered my activation. ’24 hours to activate’, they said. Another 24 hours and Hey, Presto – it worked.

The service was fast, and as I was travelling around the country filming for CyberShackTV that week I was connecting in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. It was great, the service was cheap and every time I ran out of data (and that was only once), I simply logged onto my account and added my data, with the additional amounted crediting to the account instantly.

Yep, Dodo was fantastic, albeit with a minor teething problem to begin and now, everytime we begin a new series of CyberShackTV, I log on to customer account backend, add some data and hand the usb stick to my producer who plugs it into their laptop and off they go. Easy and inexpensive.

This is what mobile internet is meant to be.

How about you, has it been plain sailing for you and Dodo?

I was considering dodo on a Sunday but thought it best to look them up on a blog. Needless to say, after reading this, I decided to go to iinet. Thanks for putting it on.

We have 19.95 a mnth social cap $200 calls and sms+1 GB of data+ free facebook, E-bay, 4 Square and my-space. Only a couple of little set up issues but they got sorted and we went over our amount a few times and it cost an extrea $30 here and there. But once I used my phone as a wireless hotspot and played my playstation on-line and i must have roamed to south america which is $10.00 per MB and I got a 'Please Pay outstanding amount in 24 hours' for $100.00. other than that it's been good reception and good speed.

I have been with dodo now for about 30 months
I use it only for caravan trips around australia
i probably could get reception or better reception with telsta in some places
but hey in most cases you either get a signal or you dont get a signal
i serously thought this time of getting a telstra dongle but the cost equation
was i would have to fork out another fifty bucks for a new dongle and $150
a year for whatever GB
I think the dodo short deals say 60/90 days are value for money and I will stay with dodo. this time 90 days as i am going over to W.A for about 3/4 months and back through S.A for 3/4 weeks
I have found the renewal process easy to complete and would recommend
dodo to any grey nomads

#3 Stung By Dodo Pendo Pad Deal.   2012-01-14 04:35:16
Last year I got a phone call from a Dodo Sales Representative, how they got my mobile phone number I have no idea, anyway, I had been suffering from sinus problems due to hayfeever, so I wasn't really in the right frame of mind, the Sales Rep was very pushy and talked fast and before I knew it he had me signed up to a $39.00 250Mb Broadband Internet with free Pendo Pad deal, with two mobile phone services I really did not need, well I ended up having to pay over $300.00 for service cancellation and usage fees ( I still have the receipt), so technically I was disconnected from my internet and phone services, but, they are still charging me for services I am not using, just received an email from them demanding payment of a further $39.00 or my service will be disconnected, funny, isn't that what I paid my service disconnection fees for?, neither my Dodo phone sims, or modem sims are even installed in their devices, the only services I'm using are Telstra Prepaid Broadband, and Vodafone Prepaid Talker Bundle, going to be contacting the Telecom Industry Ombudsman on monday next week.

We signed up for Dodo 2 years ago (We are still in the lock in contract). The only downside to being with dodo is their customer service, or lack of. They outsource to people who really only know how to restart a modem and can barely speak english.

On the other hand, dodo is the only internet provider in Australia, atleast that I know of, who offer unlimited downloads. Other providers may cap or have off peak and on peak, but Dodo does have an option to go fully unlimited. No slow downs, no off peak-on peak. The only downside being customer service when you need to call up and check if it's dodo's fault the service has dropped out again (it is), although network drops have decreased significantly over the past year.

Dodo seems to be swinging above their weight at the moment, hopefully they will adopt the Internet TV plans Internode and iinet use.
